Book of the Month Club

Relax and Rejuvenate Retreat in Costa Rica

Group Workshops

Book of the Month Club

Not your average book club! These groups will challenge and stimulate you, stirring up fresh ideas, insight and inspiration. They meet via phone or skype, with each four or five week session using a different book as the basis for discussion and learning.

Each participant will purchase the book and read 30-50 pages per week. Glen will email guiding questions and moderate an online thread available for reflections and dialogue in between group meetings. Phone sessions will allow time for each participant to offer personal responses to the readings, as well as open group discussion.

All groups will meet Thursday from 5:15-6:15 pm MST, which is 4:15-5:15 PST and 7:15-8:15 EST. The cost for the entire session, which includes all phone meetings, guiding questions and the online discussion thread, is $60 for four week sessions and $75 for five weeks. This price does not include the price of the book.

Meeting dates, books and a brief synopsis:

Expecting Adam by Martha Beck                      9/15-10/13/11

Open to Desire by Mark Epstein                      10/13-11/17/11

Open to Desire by Mark Epstein:

From the back cover: "It is common in both Buddhism and Freudian analysis to treat desire as if it is the root of all suffering and problems, but psychiatrist and Buddist practitioner Mark Epstein believes this to be a great misunderstanding. In his controversial defense of desire, he makes clear that it is the key to deepening intimacy with ourselves, each other, and our world.

Proposing that spiritual attainment does not have to be detached from intimacy or eroticism, Open to Desire takes a new look at what the Buddha actually taught about humanity's most paradoxical emotion."

"Open to Desire is a masterpiece in Epstein's unique genre of combined Buddhist, psychological and poetic insight"--Robert Thurman

"Mark Epstein is one of the most original and accessible interpreters now working at the interface of Buddhist and Western thought...sheds a new and liberating light on human desire."--Inquiring Mind

Expecting Adam by Martha Beck:

John and Martha Beck had two Harvard degrees apiece when they conceived their second child. Further graduate studies, budding careers, and a growing family meant major stress--not that they'd have admitted it to anyone. It was hard enough to admit it to themselves.

As the pregnancy progressed, Martha battled constant nausea and dehydration. And when she learned her unborn son had Down syndrome, she battled nearly everyone over her decision to continue the pregnancy.

She still cannot explain many of the things that happened to her while she was expecting Adam, but by the time he was born, Martha, as she puts it, "had to unlearn virtually everything Harvard taught [her] about what is precious and what is garbage".

"Slyly ironic, frequently hilarious, Beck's memoir charts the journey from being smart to becoming wise"--Time

"...a tough-minded yet tenderhearted book of spiritual discovery--a rueful, riveting, piercingly funny, thoroughly modern, and deeply old-fashioned memoir. In short, a book to be reckoned with"--Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way

Instructions to the Cook by Bernie Glassman:

From Bernard Tetsugen Glassman, one of America's most provocative Buddhist teachers, comes a distillation of Zen wisdom that can be used equally well as a manual on business or spiritual practice, cooking or life.

Brooklyn-born Glassman is forging a new, American brand of Buddhism, applying the principles of spirituality both in the community and in the marketplace, successfully practicing non-attachment while swimming with the sharks.

Thriving Through Transitions

Caring for the Caregiver

This group is designed for family members and others caring for an aging loved one, whether they are living in their home, assisted living, skilled nursing, or transitioning between two of these settings.

It will provide:

Support in exploring difficult decisions, feelings and emotions

Fresh perspective and a positive outlook

Tools and strategies to help you live with greater awareness, clarity, and peace of mind

You want the best care and highest quality of life for your loved one. Why not give yourself the same gift?

Mining Your Values

Although they are unseen and may go unnoticed, values are the guideposts of our lives. They point to what is important to us and shape who we are. When we live and work according to our values, we experience a greater sense of resonance, ease, and flow. We are able to make decisions and take action with increased confidence, clarity and purpose.

This workshop will help participants:

Identify their values, both as individuals and a collective

Learn to use values as tools for prioritization, decision making, and strategic planning

Use values clarification to recognize and more effectively utilize the strengths of each individual

Strengthen the team by fostering respect and appreciation for the values of others

One Minute Meditations

Meditation has become an accepted means of decreasing stress and increasing productivity. Its benefits and possibilities are being studied and verified in both the scientific and business communities. In its essence, meditation is the art and practice of focusing one's awareness on the breath. Therefore, if you have time to breath, then you have time to meditate.

This workshop will introduce simple, effective meditation techniques and help participants identify and capitalize on the many opportunities that exist throughout the day to practice them, even in the midst of very busy lives.

Participants will learn tools to help them:

Become more mindful and aware in everyday life

Mitigate the negative effects of stress, overwhelm and burnout

Boost productivity, increase focus, and encourage relaxation

See it, Create it

Our perception shapes our world. We may not be able to control what happens to or around us, but we can choose how we see and relate to it. In so doing, we become less of a victim of circumstance and gain a greater sense of control and authorship of the story of our lives, career and/or business.

This workshop will offer tools to help participants:

See and explore multiple perspectives on any given topic, situation, choice, etc.

Objectively and subjectively examine the various viewpoints and options available

Consciously choose to inhabit and take action from the most resonant, empowered perspective

Take ownership of their lives and actively create it

Office Yoga

This workshop introduces basic stretching, breathing, and meditation techniques that can be done quickly and easily throughout the day in an office/work environment. It will be tailored to meet the unique needs of each setting, as well as the needs of those participating.

This workshop will offer tools to help participants:

Decrease stress, burnout and fatigue

Increase productivity, mental clarity, and physical energy

Improve posture and alleviate the physical strain of sitting and working for long periods of time

Thriving Through Transitions

Whether we like it or not, change happens. It's a fact of life that is often beyond our control. Transition, however, can be lived intentionally once its phases are understood. Through the process of conscious transition insight, learning and opportunities emerge and the next step can unfold with less struggle and greater clarity.

Participants will learn tools to help:

Let go of the old way that has passed and move forward to consciously create the next step

Navigate the sometimes chaotic but fruitful period between old and new

Brainstorm potential new paths to follow and consciously choose the one to take
